Brief
Attic Design Consultancy were asked by the Arts Council and Creative Partnerships to act as consultants within several schools throughout the country, rather than go into the schools, generate the work then walk away, Attic have always taken on the role of ambassadors to our industry and tried to mentor the students.
As part of this process we were asked to speak to Rainhill Media Arts College, our brief from the Head was to generate marketing literature to enable the school to engage with local business and the community once they had achieved 'Media Arts College' status.

Attic's response and proposal was to offer our services as normal but to also try and engage with a group of students who would act as designers on the project, below is a brief synopsis of the process undertaken:
- Attic were briefed by the Head.
- Attic then acted as clients and briefed the student group, we gave them some verbal guidance to start off with then left them to their own devices.
- A couple of weeks later the students then pitched their ideas to Attic.
- Attic passed comments on their concepts as we would expect our clients to do.
- We then set up a full production schedule with the students,
- We brought them into our studios to work alongside our creative team.
- we helped them with photography, bringing a professional photographer in FOC to show them the basics.
- We trained them in several graphics packages.
- Once the concepts were ready & as a group Attic and the students pitched the concept to the Head, (at this stage the students had already learnt more than most degree students knew about our industry)
- The school approved the concept and we went into full production of the finished artwork with the students. The head supplied all the copy, the students with our guidance took all the photos, we helped them generate the press ready artwork.
- Once final approval was achieved we took the students to see the job on press at a large local printers.
The final outcome of this project was that a group of approx 20 - 5th and 6th form students spent nearly 5 months working very close to Attic, understanding our industry, the pressures and skills required and gaining valuable experience. Rainhill Media Arts College ended up with an item of marketing literature that had real meaning, it was a great story for the Head and Heads of department to help them sell their ethos to the local community and the students had some real industry experience under their belts.
The above process although described very briefly is very in-depth but very satisfying for all involved.
